Year 1 - Home Learning - Week Eight

Hi All,

I hope you all had a lovely break from home learning and enjoyed this amazing weather we have all been having.

This Summer term in Science we have the new topic of Plants! In Literacy we are writing stories and in Maths we are looking at Number and Place Value, As always, I have put the numbers 1 to 5 next to the Literacy and Maths lessons, these are a rough guide to help you know when to do what work, however, please do what you can, when you can. No pressure at all.

I will be continuing to upload work on the website throughout the term but really look forward to seeing those children who are coming in as of the 8th June!

Take care and stay safe.

Literacy (1) - The Story of The Bravest Fish

This week children will be writing their own stories. For the first lesson they can look at this story of The Bravest Fish (please supervise whilst children are online):

Literacy (1) - Story Mapping of The Bravest Fish

After watching the link ask children to fill out this story map template to get them familiar with how stories are written, Ensure children are writing in full sentences with capital letters and the beginning and full stops at the end.

Literacy (2) : Planning their own story - Story Prompt Cards

Using the prompt cards above (along with the story map plan in the link below) ask the children to start thinking about their own stories and what it will be about. If children are struggling for inspiration they could use the same story of The Bravest Fish but replace the fish with another character.

The fiirst set of blue bordered pictures (pages 1 and 2) are the characters the children could use (to include in the beginning section of their story mapping).

- The second set of blue bordered pictures (pages 10 and 11) can help the children with the build up section of their story map.

- The orange bordered set of pictures (page 12 - 14) can assist the children with the problem section of their story map.

- Finally, the pink bordered set of pictures (pages 15 and 16) can help the children with the resolution and ending section of their story map.

Literacy (2) - Planning their own story.

Using the story map template ask children to write sentences about their own stories and what will happen. Use the story prompt cards to help, these can also be stuck onto the story map to help.

Literacy (3) - The Main Character

Using the template above or drawing on a piece of paper, ask children to draw their own character and write sentences about their characters looks and personality. Encourage the use of adjectives.

Literacy (3) - The Setting

Please show the children the pictures on the link above to give them ideas about what their settings might look like.

Challenge for the children: Set a 2 minute timer and ask the children to write as many adjectives as they can in 2 minutes that describe their setting.

Once this is done ask the children to write some sentences describing their settings in more details.

Literacy (4/5) - Writing the story - Template 1 - narrow lines (2nd page of document)

Literacy (4/5) - Writing the story - Template 2 - wide lines

Above are 2 templates: number 1 is one with narrow lines and number 2 has wider lines. Please choose which template is appropiate for your childs writing.

On the final Literacy lessons of the week children are to start writing their stories using their story maps. Please print 5 pages of one of the templates so the children can create a book for their stories.

1st page - Beginning: describe the main character and the setting. What happens at the beginning of their story?

2nd page - What happens next? Is there a sign of a problem?

3rd page - What is the main plot / problem in the story?

4th page - Resolution: how is the problem solved?

5th page - Ending: how does it end? Is it a happy ending?

Please ask children to check over their work and draw and colour a picture for each page.

This is work set for over 2 days. I would love to see their completed stories! If your children are coming in on the week beginning the 8th June they can bring them in with them, or send pictures through to the office.

Science - Planting a Sunflower Seed

This term in Year 1 we will be learning all about plants. To start the term off we will be planting sunflower seeds. I am more than happy to drop off the equipment your child needs on your door step so the children can pot their own sunflower seeds and watch them grow this term. Please email the office if you would like me to do this. I can drop off a pot, sunflower seeds and compost on Wednesday.

Please go through this PowerPoint with your child. (When planting the seeds in the soil put 3 seeds in as sometimes they don't all grow).

Science - Sunflower Diary

After planting your sunflower seeds ask children to fill in the sunflower diary. Complete the following:

 - The equipment page

- The what do plants need page
